HAEN helps communities understand, build and govern technology on their own terms.

A futurist studio in Abertawe

HAEN explores how technology might become more understandable, repairable, locally useful and open to public participation. It brings technical knowledge into conversation with culture, community life and the environment.

A future owned by everyone does not require every person to become a technician, or every system to run locally. It means people should have a meaningful say in the systems that shape their lives, a practical understanding of their choices, and room to imagine alternatives.

Technological futures are usually designed elsewhere, by institutions with little knowledge of the places their systems arrive in. Beginning in Abertawe gives those abstract questions a location, and keeps Welsh language, culture and local knowledge inside the work from the start rather than added to it afterwards.

Convene / Publish / Build

Conversation becomes evidence. Evidence becomes experiment.

Convene. Public settings for difficult questions, useful disagreement and cross-disciplinary exchange.

Publish. Knowledge in forms people can read, question, copy and pass on where rights allow.

Build. Visible prototypes that expose costs, components, energy use, failures and limitations.

Current experiment / provisional

Node 01

Node 01 is HAEN's proposed first experiment in community-owned digital infrastructure: a physical, accessible demonstration of what a small local server could do, what it would require and who might participate in its governance.

It may hold local storage, offline references, community archives, civic information or small web services. These are proposed functions, not current operational claims. The first build should favour affordable, repairable hardware and document its energy use, dependencies and limitations.
